iPhone Duo Inner Screen Cracks: What Apple Says and What Owners Should Do

Apple acknowledges an inner-display problem on a “small number” of its first foldable iPhone. Here’s what’s known, what isn’t, and the steps to take if your screen fails.

The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable, and its first big hardware problem showed up within days. Over the weekend, owners posted photos of inner screens cracked along the hinge. On Monday, Oct. 26, Apple confirmed there’s a problem.

Apple’s statement

In a statement sent to several outlets, including 9to5Mac and MacRumors, Apple said it is “aware of an issue impacting the inner display on a small number of iPhone Duo units,” and that affected users should contact AppleCare for a replacement.

Apple added some background. Per 9to5Mac and MacRumors, it says most units aren’t affected, and on units that are, the problem shows up soon after purchase rather than getting worse over time.

What’s still unknown

  • The cause. Apple hasn’t said. iFixit’s teardown, cited by MacRumors and 9to5Mac, points at the hinge area, where several components meet. One possibility is a center support bar that’s meant to retract but doesn’t. That is iFixit’s theory, not Apple’s.
  • How many phones. No figures yet. AppleInsider surveyed 20 U.S. Genius Bars and heard of four affected units, all replaced. That’s a small, informal sample.
  • A broader fix. Apple hasn’t said whether a hardware or software change is coming.

The picture is further muddied by fakes. MacRumors and 9to5Mac report that some images of alleged cracks circulating online appear to be AI-generated.

Warning signs reported by owners

MacRumors says many affected units cracked in the same spot, on the lower half of the inner display along the hinge. Some owners described a stuck feeling and sometimes a popping sound just before the damage appeared.

Durability questions came first

Concerns about the hinge started before the crack photos spread. According to Mashable, YouTuber Tim Pan ran a Duo through 10,000 folds in a folding machine, plus another 1,000 folds at -4°F. Before-and-after images from his test seemed to show a much deeper crease.

The comparison everyone is making is with Samsung, now on its eighth-generation Galaxy Z Fold. Its early foldables had durability problems too, but it has had years to refine the hinge, crease and display that Apple is attempting for the first time. Samsung’s U.S. mobile account has been replying under iPhone Duo posts on X, Mashable notes.

What to do if your Duo is affected

  1. Stop folding it once you notice a line or crack, and take photos.
  2. Contact AppleCare directly, even if you bought through a carrier. 9to5Mac reports you don’t need AppleCare+ for this replacement.
  3. Book a Genius Bar visit or start a repair online. MacRumors says in-store replacements are happening, though limited stock means some owners are waiting. AppleInsider says the four cases it tracked were all fixed with replacement phones from service stock, which is kept separate from retail stock.
  4. Back up first so the swap is painless.

Our early review take

Beyond the cracks, early owners have flagged first-generation rough edges: a matte protective layer that dulls color and picks up glare, a FaceTime camera that leans heavily on processing, and many apps (including some of Apple’s own) not yet optimized for the inner screen. Pre-orders opened Oct. 16 and sold out quickly, with some delivery dates pushed into January 2027.

Should you buy one now? If you need a foldable today, Apple’s quick acknowledgment and replacement policy reduce the risk. If you can wait, a few weeks of app updates and clearer data on the hinge problem will give you a much better picture.
